Fukyuuten - Eternal Sky
A downloadable game
A spiritual successor to Winter, Fukyuuten (or Eternal Sky) was made originally one year it in another compo in 2004, with mostly the same team. Andy Friesen did the main engine code, Troy Potts (Thrasher) and I did maps and scripting, and our resident Art Deity Corey Annis did some more maps and all the (much more colorful!) art. This time, all the music and sound was original, made by Troupe Gammage.
We wanted to differentiate it from Winter by being a lot less solitary and depressing, and not taking itself quite so seriously. It is set in a series of floating islands, and the protagonist, Anastasia, actually speaks and has (somewhat silly) conversations with the local island residents. Until of course, something occurs that makes her need to explore and find out what is going on, and could it threaten their livelihood.
Unfortunately even though we had a strong team and we were able to reuse and improve upon Winter's engine, we had less of a timeframe to finish the game and a lot of content was cut and the game was basically unfinished and ended abruptly at the end of the first dungeon. But what was there was pretty fun and I feel should still be made available.
I intend to bring over many of the same improvements I did for Winter - adding an automap at least for the dungeon, better damage indicators and enemy balancing, add in the unfinished shop system, and some scenario improvements that should make it more of a game. I may even add a bit of content from an area that didn't make the cut originally. I expect this should be done by mid-spring.
Whether or not I make this more than just a demo and turn it into more of a complete game remains to be seen. We'll just have to see how much people like it!
